We are still far away from the day when you can step into a “teleporter” unit and be a thousand miles away in the blink of an eye Video Conference SW Floridato attend an important conference or business meeting. Unfortunately, our physical bodies are still very much subject to the laws of nature and, therefore, we must make do with taking flights, trains, buses and the like.

So what does Virtual Actually Mean?

The concept of virtual meetings actually began long ago – with the advent of teleconferencing. When you are on a phone call with more than one person from more than one location, you are, in effect, having a virtual meeting. That means you are not really there, but you can have a conversation just as if you were.

Today, however, the concept of virtual meetings has expanded to include several other technologies than just phone conferencing facilities. Here, we take a look at some of the advances in technology that enable virtual meetings and make it less of a requirement for people to travel extensively to conduct their business:

Video Conferencing:

This is one of the most revolutionary advances that modern technology has been able to make in recent times. Of course, the technology itself is not new, having first been explored with the birth of television. Not surprisingly, most people don’t associate television with video conferencing because it lacks one critical element – two-way communication. But even as early as World War II, two-way communication was in existence, connecting Berlin with other German cities via coaxial cables. Subsequently, NASA used radio links to establish video connections with their manned spacecraft.

Remote access technology, also known as desktop sharing, is also an essential part of ‘web conferencing’ technology. There are essentially two types of access that can be granted to the host’s computer screen: view-only and control access. Depending on the extent of collaboration required, either one can be given to the attendees of a virtual meeting. Used in combination with video conferencing, this puts a powerful tool in the hands of meeting organizers around the world.

File-sharing:

The days of having to physically send documents before a scheduled meeting are now gone. However, rather than disappearing completely, it has merely taken another form, called file-sharing. Today, during the course of a live meeting, virtual documents and files can easily be sent back and forth so all attendees have access to the same information, eliminating confusion and bringing people together more effectively.

These are just some of the technologies that make ‘virtual meetings’ a possibility. At Premier , you will find these and other technologies that will help you achieve a virtual environment for your business needs.
